Ms Gay Ireland 2010 will be the first ever national final where gay/lesbian women will compete for the chance win the title and bring the event to their hometown in 2011!
The event saw its beginnings when Miss Gay Galway was held by Eden in August of 2008. Dee Bastick won and she became Miss Gay Ireland, finishing second in Miss Gay UK & Ireland in Birmingham that November. In 2009, Passion of Newry held a joint competition for Mr and Miss Gay Newry with Gemma Bavisi winning the title.
Suggestions of a full national final during Waterford Pride2010 were made late in 2009 and early 2010 and with efforts to secure the missgayireland.com domain name proving unsuccessful, Miss became Ms! Meanwhile, in Cork, the idea of Ms Gay Cork was floated about and met with lots of enthuasiasm. Waterford’s hosting of Ms Gay Ireland 2010 was announced officially shortly after.
Since then, heats have been announced all over Ireland, North and South, and the winners will converge on the Forum in Waterford on the 10th of September. All proceeds raised will be split between a nominated Irish women’s charity and the winner’s selected charity.

Some of you may be aware that during Northwest Pride the heats for the Leitrim “Ms Gay Ireland” were held. Competition was stiff as each contestant gave their best in order to represent their beloved regions yet it was the lovely Martina Walker who was crowned Ms Gay Leitrim at a joint Northwest Pride/Outwest gig during Northwest Pride.
She’ll be taking part in the finals at the Tower Hotel in Waterford on Friday 24th September. If she wins (and we really hope she does), not only will she take home the crown, but she’ll be bringing the final to Leitrim in 2011!
Now to the call for support…
Each finalist has to fundraise for a charity of her choice. Martina has chosen the Irish Women’s Camp and is trying to raise as much as possible between now and the 24th. This is a perfect chance to support Martina and also raise some much needed funds for a very worthy cause. Any donations, however small, will be very gratefully recieved, and will help fund the Women’s Camp in these lean years.
If you’d like to organise a fundraiser in your own neck of the woods that would be great – as part of Martina’s posse on this gig, I know she’ll be really pleased at any support you or your friends can give her in her bid for the title.
Donations & pledges can be sent to:
Martina Walker, Boihy, Dromahaire, Co. Leitrim.Cheques/Postal orders to Irish Women’s Camp Collective, please.
And if you can get to the gig and support Martina, that would be excellent! Tickets are €10, and the door is split between the winner of Ms Gay Ireland and the new LGBT Trust Fund.
Thank you all…
Northwest Pride
